Alexa’s last pedi appointment went well. She weighed in at 14lbs and 25inches. I know last month they said she was 14.25lbs, but their scales must have been off since she was weighed a week later and was a pound less. The doctor was made aware of this discrepancy and said that it’s safe to assume something was done wrong last month. She did grow an inch though….so all is well either way! She’s up to date for her 4 month shots (remember….we delayed the vaccinations due to her teeny tiny size).
There will be 2 more monthly visits, and then we’ll move on to the twice yearly pedi appointments. Good thing, we’re getting tired of going, even though we do adore her doctor!
Check the Milestone Chart for a few small updates.

We had 2 appointments yesterday back down at Jersey Shore Medical. First was a follow up visit with the audiology department to check on Miss Alexa’s hearing. She’s doing just fine, and her hearing is normal. We then met with the Infant Toddler Assessment Program staff for another assessment of her developmental progress. Alexa did great, showing off all her new tricks and charming everyone! She scores somewhere between her real and adjusted age…so while she’s actually 7 months (TODAY!) and was supposed to be almost 5 months…she’s developmentally 6 months πŸ™‚
One weird thing was that she measured 2 inches longer (26 inches) and about a pound lighter (13.5 lbs) than last weeks doctor’s appointment. Someone’s scale is off, but as long as she’s growing and gaining no one is concerned. It’s still strange that we’d get such different numbers. Ah well…

Alexa now weighs in at 14lbs and 4ozs, and is 24 inches (TWO FEET!!!!) long. She had 3 more shots today. Poor dear is always a crank-puss the evening after vaccines.
We’ve also had a few more milestones met in the recent weeks (check the cart for details). One of the cutest was when Alexa found her feet πŸ™‚

My goodness, Alexa has gained over a pound in 9 days! She’s now weighing in at 12.5lbs. That’s 18 ozs, 2 ozs a day. My goodness…guess she’s eating better than we thought…even with the ear ache! We had a doctor’s visit today to check out her ear, and she was re-weighed. In not so great news, little miss has a slight ear infection. Poor dear 😦 We thought she was having ear pain from teething. The doctor thinks she has a slight cold, and that it was brewing an ear infection (which is a common pairing in babies). Alexa is on a 10 day course of antibiotics now, and will hopefully be feeling much better very soon.

Alexa has had a HUGE few weeks. She’s had so many firsts, that we’ll just list them for you πŸ™‚
Friday 7/24 – Finally reached out and grabbed her first toy
Sunday 7/26 – Rolled over from tummy to back
Friday 7/31 – First full giggle
Wednesday 8/12 – First practice run with solids (rice cereal) Picture to prove it!

We are OFFICIALLY off the apnea monitor!!! Little miss is healthy and strong, and we couldn’t be happier. We got the news yesterday. Alexa now weighs 11lbs 6ozs and is 23.5 inches long. She’s growing perfectly, and the pediatrician is amazed with how strong she’s gotten.

It looks like our baby is teething. The pediatrician agrees that all signs point to yes. That means her sleep has been affected (which was bound to happen at 4 months corrected anyway). We’re trying to keep her comfortable and happy with lots of stuff to chew on.

All in all it’s been a crazy few weeks, but she’s getting so big and we couldn’t more proud of Alexa.

The Apnea Clinic visit went fantastically! Alexa had her FIRST clean monitor download. That means she had ZERO apneatic episodes this time! She also weighed in at 10lbs even, that’s up 2ozs from 2 days prior.

On Wednesday Peter noticed that she loves to bring her burp cloths (and fists) to her mouth. She hugs them like a “lovey” πŸ™‚ On Thursday Alexa amazed us once again by finally reaching out and grabbing onto her rattle during tummy time. She’s been doing it with her other toys since, and has even started to bring them to her mouth. Well…she’s attempting it, but her aim is a little off πŸ˜›
(Looks like Little Miss might be a lefty. Though, maybe we’re just holding things with our right hands….in front of her left, lol)

Miss Alexa had yet another well visit with the pediatrician. She received another round of vaccines, poor dear was not a fan 😦 We’ve been informed that she is no longer anemic (noted in the last update), and had significant increases in her iron levels. She’s now 9lbs 14ozs and 22inches! We have another Apnea Clinic appointment tomorrow, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a clean monitor download this time.

Oh boy have we had a lot of appointments lately. Alexa checks out great on all accounts! The cardiologist did an ultrasound, and while there is a tiny murmur, it’s something expected with prematurity. The issue should resolve itself and we will follow up in 6 months. He assured us there was nothing to worry about, and that it was too small to do anything with either way πŸ™‚
We had Alexa’s blood drawn again to check her iron. She was perfect, no more anemia!
Alexa also had a developmental assessment last week. She is right on track for her corrected age, even a little ahead of schedule πŸ™‚ It was at this appointment that we found out she has grown to 9.5 lbs and 22.75 inches! She’s such a big little girl, well to us anyway. She’s finally fitting into her 0-3 month clothes, and we have some cute things for this stage (THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!).

Alexa had yet another visit to the pediatrician’s office last Tuesday. She weighed in at 9 pounds and measured 21 inches. The doctor is thrilled with her progress. She also gave us the “all clear” on the Thrush, so that medication has been dropped! Little Miss was very brave for 2 more vaccines this time and needs her blood drawn once more to check for anemia, just to be safe. We’ll take care of that this week since there was no need to put her through another pricking after 2 shots.
The doctor heard a slight heart murmur and wants us to have it checked out by a pediatric cardiologist. She didn’t seem too concerned, and told us not to worry. We’ve scheduled an appointment, next week, with the same group that saw her in the NICU.
We have another apnea center visit this coming week (keeping fingers crossed for a clean download of the monitor). Hopefully we’ll have just one month left of the alarm after this appointment. We have YET ANOTHER appointment with the group that performs developmental assessments of preemies next week as well. GEEZE we have A LOT of appointments coming up!
In WAAAAAY more exciting news….Alexa has started smiling! Big, open mouth, toothless grins of pure joy and love πŸ™‚ They started on Thursday, and now that she seems to have her practice down we’ll have pictures to prove it soon enough!!!

Alexa was off Zantac for a few days but started to have reflux symptoms again, so she was put back on the twice a day dosage. She’s much more comfortable now.
Other than that, and some lingering Thrush (still being treated), she’s doing great! We can’t believe how strong our little girl is getting. Holding her head up and standing in our laps (well …against our chests). We cannot wait until she’s old enough to start playing with her toys πŸ™‚ She’s starting to reach for them already.
A sleep schedule seems to be setting in. Little Miss sleeps for roughly 4-5 hours each night after her last feeding of the day, then wakes to nurse…and sleeps another few hours after that. We’re all much better rested these days. A scheduled nap time is looming, maybe then Amber will be able to get some work done during the day πŸ˜›

The apnea clinic appointment went well. While she showed a few episodes a month ago..and none since, we still need to keep her on the monitor for 2 more months. They want 2 clean downloads before they’ll take her off. We’re happy to keep her hooked up at night though, as it provides peace of mind. They did, however, take her off Zantac since she no longer seems to suffer from reflux πŸ™‚

Yesterday’s doc visit went great. Alexa’s thrush is clearing up nicely and she gained more weight! We were worried since last weeks sick visit showed no gain (she wasn’t eating well due to the thrush), but she’s up to 8lbs 8oz…that’s 11ozs in 7 days!! It looks like breastfeeding is going WAY better that assumed πŸ™‚ They didn’t measure her length this time, so we’ll have to do it ourselves tomorrow. I’ll add it to the chart then.
We still have one more visit this week with the Apnea Center. Little Miss had a few episodes earlier this month on the monitor, so we expect to have it for at least another 2 months.

We’ve been battling a case of Thrush this week 😦 Little Miss is doing much better though, yay! We have regular pediatrician and apnea clinic visits this coming week, so wish us luck πŸ™‚

This week marks the start of our weaning Alexa from formula supplementation to exclusive breastfeeding. It will take a while and be exhausting for Amber, so she’ll be out of commission for a while πŸ™‚
Alexa had her first vaccine today. She took it so well, such a brave little girl! She’s exhausted from the days events though, and resting up. She was also measured during today’s visit and currently weighs in at 7lbs 13ozs and is 20inchs long. She’s finally big enough to fit into her new cloth diapers!

Alexa had her first follow up appointment at the Apnea Center. While there were a few episodes on her printout from the last month…she’s doing well enough to be taken off the monitor during the day. Now she will only need to be hooked up while she’s sleeping at night, whenever one of us drives alone with her, or when we leave the room for any length of time! That means she has no strings…to hold her down πŸ™‚ She’s also been taken off of caffeine treatments! We’re thrilled πŸ™‚

Today Alexa had yet another great Pediatrician visit. She’s up 20ozs from last time (that’s in 14 days)!! The doctor was more than impressed. It looks like nursing is really doing its job πŸ™‚ The doctor also noted that she just adored our cute little cloth diapers, and raved about how simple they were compared to the old fashion ones!
We were a little concerned with how pale our little girl has looked lately (though it might be that she’s just taking on her mom’s coloring…haha), so we had her iron checked. That means a little prick on the heel. She’s so brave and took it so well. If she were old enough she would definitely deserve a lollipop (instead she got loads of hugs and kisses)! We’ll get the results back in the next day or so.
Tomorrow she has yet another appointment with the Apnea Clinic, so we’ll find out just how well her breathing has progressed. The monitor hasn’t gone off nearly as much as it did in the NICU…and in the last week or so we’ve only had one or two real alarms (they only last for a brief moment, and then all is well again). At this point we feel like she could be taken off of it, but all preemies born before 32 weeks are required to be on it for a least 2 months. So that’s another 4 weeks of lugging the damn thing around, ah well….

It’s been over a week since our last pedi appointment and Alexa looks like she’s bigger already. We cannot wait to see how much she’s gained over the past 9 days. She’s grown out of her first preemie outfit, and almost fits into “normal” newborn clothes now!
Peter returned to work last Thursday, so Amber spent the rest of last week and the first 2 days of this week alone with her baby girl nursing and napping πŸ™‚ Amber’s mother arrived on Tuesday night and has been a huge help. Miss Alexa doesn’t like to be put down during the day, so having someone around the hold the babe has been wonderful so Amber and eat lunch or shower, lol!.

Alexa had her second pediatrician appointment yesterday the 8th. She’s up to 5lbs 12ozs and 18.5inches!! She’s doing amazingly well. We did, however, decide to wait till she’s above 6lbs to start her vaccinations.

Our first visit with the Pediatrician was last Monday (March 30th). Alexa weighed 5lbs even already!!!! WOW! We met with Dr. Fury D.O. and we absolutely loved her. The visiting home nurse assigned to us by the hospital came on Tuesday. Alexa is doing great and we have everything in order. Our next doctor’s appointment is tomorrow April 8th where Alexa will begin her vaccination schedule (oh no SHOTS! poor little girl). They would have started it last time, but she was just so little and they didn’t want to stick her skinny little thighs. They’ve fattened up just a bit, so there’s more cushion πŸ™‚
