Sweet Sweet Sleep

As some of you may already know, we’ve been trying out something new with Alexa’s sleep routine*.  In the past we had always nursed her to sleep.  While Amber intends to continue breastfeeding until, and possibly beyond, Alexa’s corrected first birthday** (April 30th), we need to get to a point where she can fall asleep on her own.

Our new routine is simple;  Alexa has her teeth brushed, she’s changed, then nursed or bottle fed before bedtime.  One of us then lays down next to her while she falls asleep.  There’s a mattress on the floor of her nursery, and that’s where she sleeps…for now.  Right now Alexa still cries some or fusses before she drifts off, but she IS able to fall asleep without any real help.  The first few tries we would pat/shush/hum, but that seemed to rile her up instead of calm her.  It seems to work best if we lay there and pretend to sleep 🙂

This method basically mimics the “No-Cry Sleep Solution” that isn’t really without tears, but means that you create postive sleep associations and respond immediately when your child needs you.

Next week we intend to start moving progressively further away so we’re still in the room but not laying next to her.  If that works, the next step is to see if she’ll fall asleep in her CRIB!  Right now she still wiggles around and flails too much while she’s trying to self comfort.  THOUGH…she did fall asleep for this morning’s nap with ZERO fussing or crying.  She just drifted off peacefully and slept for 2.5 hours!  I HUGE achievement for sure!

It’s looking good, but as with any change…there are sure to be some setbacks (like this afternoon’s nap lasted all but 30 minutes total due to another round of TEETHING, errr).  Two steps forward, one step back, or so they say 🙂  Hopefully Alexa will learn to sleep through the night soon enough, but right now she’s still waking/feeding and we’re still tending to her as needed.  (Peter wants you to know he suggested doing this and he was RIGHT about something, haha)

*We do not believe in CIO (crying it out) or even Ferberizing (the extinction method).  We practice a modified attachment style of parenting and do not believe that children are beings that need to be “trained”, so conventional sleep-training styles did not appeal to us.  We chose to co-sleep and to tend to Alexa’s needs through the night…because parenting did not stop when we wanted to go to sleep for the night.

**We’re not convinced she’s ready to be on “milk” completely since she doesn’t eat like a true 1 year old.

Thank you! We’re looking forward to getting Alexa to the point of being able to fall asleep on her own so if, GAWD forbid, lol…we actually want to stay out past her bedtime. Right now, it would be both torture for whoever babysat, and for her.
